Interview with Fashionary

this is for all designers, illustrators, dreamers in fashion industry
fashion people all :)
original post is of course for the 1stlook magazine's blog at: http://firstlook_b.blog.me/90138132198
read this interview and get to know more about the fashion diary
"Fashionary"

패셔너리는 패션 사전 + 다이어리의 혼합말로 지어졌다고
합니다. 한글 기사는 위에 링크로 따라가시면 되요 ^^

How did the idea of making fashion notepad, sketchbook, diary began?

Having a sketchbook that is tailor made for fashion designers has been
always my dream. Animators can use story board templates to draw,
graphic designers can use dotted paper to have a grid system.
And being fashion designers, we should have our own sketchbook to
streamline the development. And I decide to make it on my own!
The problem for the traditional template is that we can't draw directly on it.
We need to place a semi-transparent paper on top of it for sketching
different post, and it is not convenient enough to bring along and draw everywhere.
My girlfriend and I started to think if semi-transparent templates of figures were on every page of
sketchbook, we could focus on our designs without considering technical
information for reference. So I decided to combine the templates with blank papers,
to make the template barely visible, so the designers would not be bordered by
the template and they can draw and write notes as freely as they want on the
template pages.
Beside the templates, I believed the quick search of fashion information
should be included in Fashionary. In order to search for most suitable
fashion to put in the book, I started to ask for my fashion designer friends
for generating idea, we found that the body measurement and the unit system
is a must, also the basic patterns and the categories of garments.
And all agree that the typography and the presentation board border us,
so I start to do research in those area.
After the continuous hardworking for 10 months,
Fashionary was born on August, 2009!

I think style not just comes from the outfit wears
but also from the attitude, smile, and the stationary item
they hold on to as well. How can one become "fashionable" in your opinion?

I think fashionable is to do with something you like, having your own style
and not being bothered by others!

Tips for readers to be great organizers?

Fashionary include yearly calendar for people to jot down the important days.
And on every single template sheet, there are blank date allowing
designers to mark the design date which make your design process organized.
And there are paper pocket on the last page which is good for designers
to put in their inspirations, like photos, fabrics, ...etc.

How is each cover made? Any collaboration process?

The cover is made by high-quality cotton fabric. Last Christmas,
we have made special red version and in this winter,
we teamed up with UK Brand-Sibling for a great fall collection on
400 limited collector's boxsets. This special edition includes:
a knitted iPad pouch + Fashionary + mini knitwear handbook.
The Fashionary cover are patterned with Sibling's signature
red & lemon leopard print with skull graphic.

What does "fashionary" mean?

The name "fashionary" comes from
"Fashion + Dictionary + Diary." The sketchbook is combined with
intensive fashion information and blended figure templates.
It is the first sketchbook tailor-made for fashion designer and it's the perfect tool
for brainstorming, fast sketching & quick referencing.

What is the goal for fashionary to become?
(or to be the "first" at?)

The main goal for Fashionary is to make the life more easy for
fashion designer, and we will continue to improve according to feedbacks.
Although the job is hard, still sweet!
